Five "Don't Miss" interviews on healing prayer

Picture
Connie Coddington, CSB, is a Christian Science practitioner and teacher. She has launched a new website, including a blog titled, "Powerful Prayer." If you haven't yet visited Connie's site and blog, you will find a wealth of information on healing prayer.

I have linked below to five hour-long interviews that she recorded sometime ago, and has since made available on her blog, with experienced Christian Science healers on the subject of their powerful prayers. Whether you listen in for a few minutes, or treat yourself to the full interviews, I am sure you will find loads of insight and inspiration to nourish your prayers.

Be sure to check back often to Connie's blog.  She is posting new interviews every week or two.  She has about 55 hours of material saved up for us! So expect a bounty of good to follow. Also, click on each interviewees name to link through to their website, blog or biographical information. Lot's more good to find in these links.

Up, like the eagle

Picture
If a serpent works its way into an eagle's nest and begins to wrap itself around the feet and legs of the mighty bird, what should the eagle do? If he looks down and fights, he risks being bitten. But if he takes wing and flies up high above that nest, the serpent will ultimately drop away and fall by its own weight.

Here is God's message to the children of Israel, explaining this very process:

"Ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you unto Myself."  Exodus 19:4
When in doubt or fear or entangled by a problem, it can help to think of the eagle, showing us the way up and out of danger.  We, too, can take mental and spiritual wing and go high in prayer. When we let mighty Love reveal it's all-power, Mind's perfect, spiritual government encompasses us and we feel the lift. We rise above. In reality, we are strongly made, always able to overcome evil and soar.
...they shall mount up with wings like eagles. Isaiah 40:31
The serpent of evil will not hold on forever. And it can't fly. The pure air of Mind's spiritual altitude - and of Love's divine attitude - cuts off evil's breath until it suffocates and lets go.

Remember the eagle, and fly.

VIDEO: Healing through prayer of a broken toe

Picture
Here is my first attempt at video blogging. Please bear with me. There is clearly a learning curve.  Shaky camera work, scary closeups, blurry bits and unsynchronized lips/words aside - it was fun. And hey, you can always listen with your eyes closed!  Find a link to a print version of this experience as it appeared in the March 1999 Christian Science Journal.

"We cannot in reality suffer from breaking anything except a moral or spiritual law. . . . The harmony and immortality of man will never be reached without the understanding that Mind is not in matter. Let us banish sickness as an outlaw, and abide by the rule of perpetual harmony,—God's law. It is man's moral right to annul an unjust sentence, a sentence never inflicted by divine authority." ( Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, p. 381).

Perking up Bible Lesson study

Picture
I recently received this request:  "Help me find understanding in the [weekly Christian Science Bible Lesson], as when I read it I feel confused. People will say to me, 'Oh, wasn't that a wonderful lesson on happiness?' or something, and I can barely remember what it was about. If I read it 4 times I still don't get it... I feel stupid."

RESPONSE: Nah, you aren't stupid. Like anything, Bible study takes practice and tools can help.  When I first attempted a regular study routine, I didn't think I got much out of what I read either.  But actually, good stuff was getting in (and coming out in my life) without my realizing it. The discipline of sticking with it, even when it was difficult, helped me became more familiar with the layout of the Bible. And although I, too, often couldn't pinpoint an overriding theme from the Lesson, certain passages did tend to stick with me or pop back into thought when I needed them.

But to begin to really enjoy the study, I tried different things that helped me find more substantial meaning. I learned off the bat that it's not important what the lesson may mean to others. It's important that it mean something to me.  If your Bible study is in a rut or if you are having difficulty staying focused, you might try one or more of these ideas which helped me to perk up my study life.

Picture
Appendix B
  • In the back of the big Complete Concordance to the Writings of Mary Baker Eddy is an Appendix B that list the Bible citations Mary Baker Eddy used in her other writings (Prose Works, Poems and the Church Manual). There is an appendix B for the Science and Health part, too, but often those passages appear in the Bible Lesson already. I found it helpful to look up whatever Bible Lesson citations appear in other places in her writings. This further reading can help expand the application of a Scriptural passage in new ways.

Picture
Www.bible.cc
  • Online comparative Bibles can be very helpful, too. I have worked with many over the years. But my current favorite is www.bible.cc.  If there is a verse that seems "Greek" to me, I look it up on that website and find another translation that is more understandable. It's fun to look up well-worn passages, too, for a fresh take on the familiar. A lovely feature of this site: When you click on the translation you like, it takes you into the text so that you can read the entire passage in context.  At the bottom of each individual citation page there is a collection of highlights from various Bible commentaries that sometimes offer helpful background and context for the passage, too.

Picture
Mybiblelesson.com
  • One of my favorite tools for studying the Bible Lesson is the mybiblelesson.com version available by online subscription (you can get individual Lessons, too) through the Christian Science Publishing Society. My Bible Lesson is designed for youthful thinkers and readers - I figure that alone counts me in. It is colorful and has sketches and captioned photos and research that I find helpful to expand on the ideas.  I also like the format of having the Bible passages appear to the left of the page, and correlative passages from Mary Baker Eddy's Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures on the right. I find this layout particularly helpful when I try to identify why and how a particular passage from Science and Health illumines the spiritual sense of a Bible passage or story.

Picture
Mark the books
  • Much as I enjoy the tools available for reading the Bible Lesson in printout form, nothing beats putting in my metal markers and using blue chalk to prepare my books for study. There is something about glimpsing what I will get to study during the week that gives me a feeling of anticipation and expectation of good. And that half hour I give myself on Sunday afternoon to prepare the books pays big dividends all week long. The ideas that have most meaning for me from the study often aren't even in the lesson. They are in the verses above or below the marked passages, or on the opposite page, that leap up and smack me with insights that meet my need. That's when the study stops being "the" Bible Lesson, but becomes "my" Bible Lesson - God's Word speaking to me.

I frequently receive questions from readers of this blog concerning Bible study.  How do you keep your study fresh and alive? Feel free to share in your comment below.

I hope you enjoy this blog. And if you do, I doubly hope you will share it!

Reaching someone who seems beyond help

Picture
QUESTION: “How does one heal someone who has lost their sense of orientation, who is 80 percent deaf, who doesn’t know who he is, or with whom he is, anymore? I believe in spiritual healing. I want to see such healing for this man.” (Question originally asked in French.)

RESPONSE:
Prayer is especially helpful in such cases because it bypasses broken down lines of human communication and lifts the case directly to God.  Prayer involves engaging spiritual sense, which is the innate capacity we all have to discern spiritual reality. Through spiritual sense we can discern the true and present nature of God and man and prove that no one is out of reach of God’s care.

When the material senses break down, a case can seem unreachable. But this evidence of deterioration only points to a mortal belief about man as cut off from good. This is never the actual case. No one is without hope or help.  Your prayers that seek out God’s perspective of His creation can lead you to the truth about the material senses – that they neither limit nor define a man’s capabilities. When we stop fretting over what seems to limit the person and discover real life to be limitless and free in God, the door opens wide to healing.

The identity and liberty of each one of God’s children are intact and safe. Never separated from the divine Life that is God, real life is completely free from limiting, material conditions. We don't have to wait for some hereafter moment to experience the freedom of spiritual being. This present state of existence is completely discoverable through prayer.

Picture
A marginal heading, “Identity not lost” appears twice in Mary Baker Eddy’s Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures:

“What is man? Brain, heart, blood, bones, etc., the material structure? If the real man is in the material body, you take away a portion of the man when you amputate a limb; the surgeon destroys manhood, and worms annihilate it. But the loss of a limb or injury to a tissue is sometimes the quickener of manliness; and the unfortunate cripple may present more nobility than the statuesque athlete, — teaching us by his very deprivations, that ‘a man’s a man, for a’ that.’” (172)

“The material body and mind are temporal, but the real man is spiritual and eternal. The identity of the real man is not lost, but found through this explanation; for the conscious infinitude of existence and of all identity is thereby discerned and remains unchanged. It is impossible that man should lose aught that is real, when God is all and eternally his. The notion that mind is in matter, and that the so-called pleasures and pains, the birth, sin, sickness, and death of matter, are real, is a mortal belief; and this belief is all that will ever be lost.” (302)

Picture
If you are worried that your prayers “here” may not reach one in need “there,” don’t be.  It has been scientifically proven that the discernment of the true nature of man in one human consciousness can set others free from their false beliefs about themselves.  Christ Jesus discerned the perfect man that divine Truth, God, creates and maintains. He did this in cases where, to material sense, the patient seemed completely out of reach. (See the healing of Jairus’ daughter, Gospel of Luke 8:41-56; and the raising of Lazarus from the dead, Gospel of John, chapter 11) Jesus proved that no one cut off from the Love that is God.  He discerned the kingdom of God within us – the spiritual capacity to know and express the Life that is God.

Picture
Mary Baker Eddy explained, “When speaking of God’s children, not the children of men, Jesus said, “The kingdom of God is within you;” that is, Truth and Love reign in the real man, showing that man in God’s image is unfallen and eternal. Jesus beheld in Science the perfect man, who appeared to him where sinning mortal man appears to mortals. In this perfect man the Saviour saw God’s own likeness, and this correct view of man healed the sick. Thus Jesus taught that the kingdom of God is intact, universal, and that man is pure and holy. Man is not a material habitation for Soul; he is himself spiritual. Soul, being Spirit, is seen in nothing imperfect nor material.” (476)

Jesus didn’t illustrate an exception to the rule. He showed that the power to heal belongs to each of us and can be demonstrated when we understand who we are as children of God. The divine perspective that heals the sick and raises oneself and others out of the oblivion of material sense is available to everyone who is willing to seek it out.

Your prayers are important. Let your search for healing begin with deepening, expanding, your understanding of the true nature of God.  The Bible and Mary Baker Eddy’s Science and Health are indispensable tools to aid you in your prayers. Let them open your eyes to what God is, and to what he is doing right now for His creation.

I frequently receive questions from readers of this blog concerning the practice of healing prayer.  Many questions are personal in nature, but occasionally I receive a question generic enough to be addressed for a wider audience. If you have helpful thoughts to share with this questioner, please feel free to leave them in your comment below.

I have practiced Christian Science professionally in
    some form since 1979.
    But my journey with
    Christian Science started
    in a Sunday school
    where as a young child
I was taught the Scriptures and some simple basics
    of Jesus' method of
    scientific Christian healing.
    A significant experience
    at the age of twelve
    opened my eyes to
    the great potential
    of this practice.
    After impaling my foot
    on a nail,
I prayed the way I had learned
    in Sunday school.
    Within moments
    the pain stopped
    and healing began.
By the next morning the wound had disappeared completely.
    Having experienced
    the great potential
    of Christian Science,
    there would be no
    turning back.
