Cancer healed

On Wednesdays throughout the world, people gather in churches and in groups to share what they have seen and experienced of God's, Truth's, healing power. You hear some pretty amazing things at a Wednesday evening testimony meeting in a Christian Science church. It's not who is speaking or even how the story is told that makes this sharing so special. One feels the power and presence and love of God, through Christ, that heals. In the Church Manual, Mary Baker Eddy wrote, "More than a mere rehearsal of blessings, it scales the pinnacle of praise and illustrates the demonstration of Christ, "who healeth all thy diseases" (Psalm 103:3)." Here is my testimony.

In 2001 I began exhibiting symptoms of breast cancer. My mother had a mastectomy a few years earlier.  My aunt also had a mastectomy, but she passed away from the disease. I had a young daughter.  I had no intention of going anywhere, nor did I wish to see her become a victim of this disease.  So when I began developing symptoms, I felt I had no choice but to stop this epidemic of fear and disease in the family.

By the world’s standards, my treatment was unconventional, but it was perfectly normal for me. I chose to rely on God through prayer for healing. I already had quite a bit of experience with healing prayer, having had quick healing of other conditions at various times in my life, including pneumonia and broken bones.

Aside from the reliance on prayer, I made another perhaps unconventional decision. I decided not to treat the disease of cancer. My prayer was not about getting rid of cancer. Disease and symptoms were not the subject of my prayers. Understanding and knowing God was. In Christian Science practice, healing prayers involve a search for Truth, for God, and for the true spiritual state of man as the perfect reflection, the image and likeness of divine Good.  My prayer was about God –  the search to know God and to understand my spiritual lineage as his child.

Daily study of the Bible and Mary Baker Eddy's Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures helped anchor my prayer in certain key truths about God's nature, which in turn helped me to know myself better:

• Knowing God as Mind, my God could not create a stupid, fallible Adam and Eve creation out of dysfunctional dust. I learned that I am not Eve’s daughter.
• Knowing God as Spirit, my God could not create life out of its own opposite – matter. I learned that I am not the product of DNA.
• Knowing God as Love, my God could not create his children to inflict harm on one another through heredity, contagion or any other human contact. I learned that my entire family - all God's children - are in reality linked by Love, God, but not by disease.

My prayer helped me understand God better, which in turn helped me to know myself, my family - and everyone really - to be healthy, whole and free. It gave me a larger sense of Love that opened me to a love that leaves no one out. I prayed consistently to know God better from March to October. One morning in October, I realized I was healed.  All trace of disease was gone and have been perfectly free of that problem now for more than 10 years.

The healing Christ - the divine message revealing the truth of God as Mind, Spirit and Love - was the source of this healing.  It was the power of God, not human faith, logic, personal power or formulaic reasoning. The simple turning to the Christ to reveal moment by moment a larger sense of what God is, and how this truth of God relates to us, heals. It healed me. I am profoundly grateful.
