Zest, in its spiritual sense, is more than added spice. Zest is a spiritual attribute of God that animates creation with inspiration and pure love. But sometimes in long-term relationships, zest, joy and spontaneity become overshadowed by routine, duty and changing interests. Does this mean that love is coming to an end? Is there a way to fan the flame and rekindle the zest of inspired commitment to that something or someone we love? During the first decade of marriage, my husband and I fell comfortably and naturally into the routine of work and family responsibilities. We had a sweet, loving relationship with mostly ups and very few downs. However, as steady as things were, we were still two people evolving at our own pace, with interests and activities that sometimes converged and often diverged. To a certain extent, we had let our relationship become a bit dusty. Nearing our tenth anniversary, I was longing to rediscover the fire of purpose in the relationship. Ours was a marriage formed in prayer. When I met my husband, I had been praying daily to see the attributes of God expressed in a life-companion. Integrity, kindness, responsibility, respect, good fun, commitment to good – spiritual qualities I perceived to be foundational to a permanent relationship - are all sourced in the Creator and reflected throughout creation. I was on the lookout for the expression of these qualities in those around me, so when I met my husband I recognized them right way. And for the first years of marriage, I continued to pray regularly for our couple. But after awhile, that consistent prayer dropped off and was replaced by the day-to-day business of being a family. And the zest? The inspiration? That, too, gradually faded as the relationship was more and more deprived of that element of prayer so essential to its formation. One of my issues with the marriage concerned the subject of church. This was a big part of my life. And while he fully supported my devotion to church, for him, it wasn’t an interest. So I asked God in prayer, “After ten years together, are we really on completely different life paths? Is there anything that we can do to bring these two different tracks back together?” As I prayed for answers, I found a helpful insight in Monitor Founder Mary Baker Eddy’s textbook on Christian Science, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. She wrote, “The admission to one's self that man is God's own likeness sets man free to master the infinite idea.” I had been thinking that if only my husband would develop interests similar to mine we could rediscover our bond. But now I understood that he didn’t necessarily need to change at all. I could work on my view of him. I could pray to discern his true spiritual selfhood as a child of God. This could help us both master the infinite possibilities of our marriage. I took up daily prayer to watch for and witness my husband’s spirituality – that is, to recognize in him, once again, the expression of God’s goodness through the divine qualities that had attracted me to him in the first place. These prayers brought about a rebirth in our marriage. The zest I had been missing, the deeper companionship I sought, was restored to our relationship as I persistently witnessed to my husband’s likeness to God. He, too, noted that our marriage was better than ever. Prayer isn’t just last minute emergency life-support. Prayer can be a permanent life-link to a zestful expression of God’s goodness. The admission to oneself that everyone in our midst is a child of God, unfolds the joy and inspiration of a fulfilling life aflame with divine Love. 9/18/2017 Excellence at school School can be such an exciting place to be: Stimulating opportunities meet up with energetic learners. But what if there are problems at school? Is the path to success just inevitably hard for some? When our daughter was in the third grade, her teacher devoted the year to character-building, and the curriculum focused on the students writing and performing an opera together. By year’s end, they had refined skills of cooperation, respect, and selflessness, but they hadn’t learned much math. When she started the fourth grade, our daughter fell behind, and she struggled to pass any of her math tests. At the first parent-teacher conference I was told that if she did not do well on the next test, she would be placed in a class for slow learners. Frequent absences left me feeling disconnected from her daily life and wondering if she was getting the support and care that I as her mom should be giving her. Although she had a hands-on dad who happily covered all the bases, I bore much guilt, and this led to a combination of hovering over her when I was home and worrying when I was away. Find the Christian Science Monitor article here that tells you what I did about it. 7/10/2017 “Sit down on the green grass”When sudden chaos threatens to take over our day, there is a divine law - or Principle of good - capable of meeting the need. Christ Jesus multiplied loaves and fish to feed over 5000 people at once. Just before, he instructed his disciples to have everyone sit down by groups on green grass. (see Mark 6:39) Various Bible commentaries give different interpretations for why:
Then there is my favorite:
I picture the crowd turning from the chaos and fear of being without, to sitting down and quietly preparing for something remarkable to meet their need. Writing of the Christian Science, or divine law of good - that Christ Jesus understood, and that allowed him to meet human needs in remarkable ways, Christian Science discoverer Mary Baker Eddy wrote: “It is unwise to doubt if reality is in perfect harmony with God, divine Principle, — if Science, when understood and demonstrated, will destroy all discord, — since you admit that God is omnipotent; for from this premise it follows that good and its sweet concords have all-power. (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, 130:9) One day recently when the temperature hit its peak where I work in Paris, the departure board at a major train station indicated that all trains to many towns, including mine, had been cancelled. Then a sudden power outage knocked out the departure and track screens throughout the station, preventing anyone from knowing where the remaining trains were going. Chaos ensued. There was no staff on hand to help and audio announcements were unintelligible. I remembered Jesus’ instruction to sit down on the green grass and realized I needn’t be disturbed by the extreme heat and confusion. Rather than dashing left and right to search out a train, I went to one of the 27 tracks with unmarked trains and sat down on the train parked there. As it pulled away, I heard the announcement that I was on a high-speed train to a destination an hour beyond my home, with no indication whether we would be stopping along the way. Concerned, I prayed. Then I again remembered “Sit down on the green grass”, which reminded me to stay calm and prepare for something remarkable. After about twenty minutes, the train slowed to a stop in the town next to mine. Upon exiting, a bus pulled in front of me that would pass by my apartment. In all, my trip time was reduced by half. Remarkable. Good and its sweet concords are the product of the omnipotent Principle that is God. Understanding this can bring calm to chaos, guide our steps, and bring out remarkable solutions to any concerns. Here are the latest recordings of "Finding God, Finding Health." Enjoy! She wrote, "He had no sense of his crime; but regarded his act as one of simple justice, and himself as the victim. My few words touched him; he sank back in his chair, limp and pale; his flippancy had fled. The jailer thanked me, and said, 'Other visitors have brought to him bouquets, but you have brought what will do him good.'" (Miscellaneous Writings 112:17) A visit this June to the Main Adult Detention Facility (Sonoma County-Santa Rosa, CA) calls to thought the words of a hymn: "Healed is thy hardness, His love hath dissolved it, Full is the promise, the blessing how kind; So shall His tenderness teach thee compassion, So all the merciful, mercy shall find." (Hymn 278:3) The following report gives an insider look at what happened from the viewpoint of one of the two Chaplains that accompanied me. Chaplain's Report: “Angry No More” Jail lecture Institution(s): Main Adult Detention Facility (Sonoma County-Santa Rosa) Chaplain: Angela Sage Larsen (angelasagelarsen@gmail.com) Primary Local Committee: NorthBay@LightinPrison.org Date range: June 7, 2017 - June 7, 2017 Permissions: OK to share narrative report publicly. Christian Science Societies in Healdsburg and Lakeport, and First Churches of Christ, Scientist in Santa Rosa, Sebastopol, and Petaluma sponsored a Christian Science lecture by Michelle Nanouche, CSB; Assistant Chaplain Linda Bishop and I accompanied her for what was an extraordinary and holy experience. 40 women attended and we discovered that though it has been 3 years since a chaplain has visited this facility (and a change of administration), at least 2 women were studying Christian Science literature that had been left in our attempt to re-introduce Cristian Science to the facility. Though the administration was eager for us to come, before today, there was a sense that there would be a wait for regular visits until there was more of a demand. Before the lecture even started, there was a demand--and not surprisingly, after the lecture, the deputy requested us to supply them with options for when our regular times for church services could be!! (In the question and answer session, one detainee asked, "How often can 'Christian Science' come??" The deputy joked, "Every week!" Which seemed doable to me!) Michelle's lecture, "Angry No More" was just what the detainees needed, and they said so with grateful tears after the lecture. As Michelle addressed anger being sin--but addressed it in a compassionate and understanding, relatable way--the resistance of a few detainees visibly dissolved as they cried at the end. (I loved the lecturer's response to the crying--she likened tears to "mental sweat," and said we wouldn't run a marathon and not expect to sweat; so when we have a mental workout, it's ok to shed some mental sweat.) Michelle addressed abuse, sharing her own healing experiences; she addressed anger not being equal to or justified by love (for example, being angry at someone for hurting one that you love); she beautifully included Mary Baker Eddy's life experiences and discovery throughout the lecture in such a natural and harmonious way. The story of Mrs. Eddy (then Mrs. Patterson) not only forgiving but helping her then-husband's mistress especially resonated with the women. There were too many remarkable moments to count: when lightbulbs went off, hardness of heart was dissolved, epiphanies arrived at, and surprising insights sprung up. Michelle brought out how forgiveness was not only possible, but natural, based on Christ Jesus' example; she emphasized and explained the Sermon on the Mount and its significance and where it is found in the Bible. One takeaway that I and others appreciated deeply was Michelle's likening sin to anger and replacing sin with the word "anger" in this quote from Science and Health: "Suffer no claim of [anger] ... to grow upon the thought. Dismiss it with an abiding conviction that it is illegitimate, because you know that God is no more the author of sickness than He is of [anger]" (Science and Health, p. 390). The questions the detainees asked were insightful and articulate. Before the Q&A session, Michelle said that they could peel their questions away from the sad stories they might be tempted to tell. Instead of repeating and repeating a sad story (which never helps), they could focusing on asking their question and get answers that could help them move forward. This was an excellent means of helping the women articulate their questions. She told us that if we are to suffer, we should make sure we have something to show for it and be able to help/bless others with our story! Examples of questions include:
All of the answers Michelle gave were obviously inspired--they were clear, simple, and profound, addressing the questions themselves, as well as the thought that motivated the question. In short, the answers were deeply loving and the questioners felt loved. After the lecture, the women came up in small groups to ask questions about the books and literature we brought to give them. They were eager, appreciative, and bright. One woman told me she was trying to find her place as she was born Muslim but had an atheist father and a Catholic mother--her father being especially outspoken about his beliefs. I told her that often atheists were thinking people who could not accept things at face value, like accepting there is a God who could allow evil things to happen. I told her that Science and Health was written for and dedicated to "thinkers," and Mrs. Eddy understood how to address those hard questions; I assured the woman that she would find what she needed in that book along with the Bible (and that of course, we'd come back to see her too). She was so gentle and genuinely inquisitive. Another woman asked if we had "Daily Breads," a publication from another denomination. I told her about the Bible Lesson sermons we have and showed her in Science and Health the spiritual interpretation of the line in the Lord's Prayer that has "daily bread" as "grace for today." I showed another woman who was asking about the relationship of the Bible and Science and Health the First Tenet, which states that "the inspired word of the Bible is our sufficient guide to eternal life." I told her that Science and Health would help her understand the "inspired word of the Bible." She enthusiastically took both books. One woman rushed to the table of books, grabbing a Science and Health like a parched person would accept a big cup of water. She clutched it to her chest, breathing, "I need this book.” The lecturer told us and the administrators that it was the best facility she'd ever visited; she said that obviously the women were respected and treated with love and compassion--she could tell because of how they acted. The administrators were so pleased and confirmed that their priority of low (no) recidivism would be reached by respecting the detainees (male and female at this facility) and providing spiritual education for them as well as vocational skills. In short, it was a big, happy love fest and Linda and I can't wait to go back. She will be taking more Science and Healths tomorrow as we ran out and there was still a demand for the book! As always, I'm humbly honored and overjoyed to see the Holy Ghost at work in human consciousness intimately revealing to each of us, exactly how we need it, the presence and omnipotence of divine Love. How amazing to have this experience on the heels of Annual Meeting and the field report from Third Church, Christ, Scientist, Dallas who attested to institutional work revitalizing their church! It was programmed to be published today in the Christian Science Monitor. The status quo that accepts that evil people will do evil things has to be challenged. A course change is needed if we expect to stop terrorist acts, feed hungry children, or stop wars. And it begins with me (us), because no substantive change happens in a vaccum. So what can I (we) do? Read my article and find out. 3/27/2017 It is not too late to stop this diseaseFeeling cornered? Is the enemy advancing? Is doubt or fear niggling at you, wearing away your confidence in being healthy again? Take a lesson from Isaiah's playbook. Called by Hezekiah when an enemy army was advancing with intent to decimate a city, Isaiah prayed a prayer so significant, so powerful, that it merited two accounts in separate books of the Bible - II Kings and Isaiah - and with results so effective that they received a third mention in II Chronicles, chapter 32. Prayer stopped the deadly enemy cold. At the crescendo of Isaiah's prayer was this thundering finale: "Therefore thus saith the Lord concerning the king of Assyria, Let me break this down. In its spiritual signification we can look at the king of Assyria not as a particular person in history, but as any thought or condition that bullies or threatens to wipe us out. Point by point Isaiah explains divine Love's protective power against four specific tactics of the enemy: It shall not:
Long before the impending battle, Hezekiah battled the threats of the enemy. The enemy king sent a messenger to announce his plans to destroy the city. The intent was, of course, to undermine Hezekiah's confidence and increase his fear. Hezekiah was feeling defeated before the actual battle had begun. So when Isaiah came to his side and declared that God wouldn't allow it - that evil would not take the city - his message was like a good rain to thirsty soil. The results of his prayer were immediately evident. And graphic. "And it came to pass that night, that the angel of the Lord went out, and smote in the camp of the Assyrians an hundred fourscore and five thousand: and when they arose early in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses." Undeniably effective outcome. I learned about Isaiah's prayer when I was suffering from a case of pneumonia that was taking me down fast. I felt invaded and pervaded by disease. The fact that I had been praying for healing for a considerable time and yet the symptoms worsened, was eating away at my spiritual resolve. I didn't understand this resistance to healing and the persistence of my suffering. When I came across Isaiah's prayer, it almost seemed to arrive too late. The disease had already gotten in. The enemy was well entrenched. Or so I thought. The following explanations from pages 426 and 427 of Mary Baker Eddy's Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, were significant to my identifying the real enemy and understanding how to apply Isaiah's prayer to the case. "When it is learned that disease cannot destroy life, and that mortals are not saved from sin or sickness by death, this understanding will quicken into newness of life. It will master either a desire to die or a dread of the grave, and thus destroy the great fear that besets mortal existence... I realized that the disease symptoms were nothing more than the messages being sent ahead by the enemy to intimidate me and wear down my confidence in God and my spiritual resolve. Neither my body, nor pneumonia were the enemy. Even death wasn't the actual enemy because it would eventually be proved to me that man doesn't live or die in matter. No. The enemy bearing down on me was the fear of death. And that I could do something about. It wasn't too late to work with Isaiah's prayer. Here is a look into some of my reasoning:
As Isaiah saw regarding Hezekiah's enemy, so it was for mine. "By the way that he came" (from the nowhere of fear) "by the same shall he return (to the nothingness of fear). The pneumonia was stopped dead in its tracks. The black cloud of fear that had threatened me with aggressive symptoms dissipated completely. I was well. Don't be fooled into fighting an unreal enemy. The symptoms are a red herring. Your body doesn't hate you. The culprit is always fear. It's never too late - NEVER TOO LATE - to stop fear and disease cold. This post is an updated version of a post that first appeared on 2/10/2012.
3/21/2017 Alertness on the trainYesterday on the train I looked up from my phone to see various other people staring intently at theirs. One had a nice new haircut; another, a curious coat with raggedy edges. One pretty lady had funky glasses perched low on her nose. This bouquet of interesting folk piqued my interest, so I put the phone back in my purse. After spending a few moments contemplating outward appearances, I had a thought. What if, instead of noticing the “externals” of my companions, I looked for the qualities they expressed? And with that, the somber-shadowed car suddenly filled with light. I saw concentration, patience, intention, beauty, humor, intellect, individuality, intelligence, kindness, thoughtfulness, focus, detail, originality, gentleness, conviction, stature, seriousness and quirkiness. Bodies and physical adornment receded from my focus. What was left was pure thought. My morning and evening commutes will never be the same. We should forget our bodies in remembering good and the human race." Advancing spiritual steps in the teeming universe of Mind lead on to spiritual spheres and exalted beings. To material sense, this divine universe is dim and distant, gray in the sombre hues of twilight; but anon the veil is lifted, and the scene shifts into light. ibid. 513:6-10 “All of us who have had that veil removed can see and reflect the glory of the Lord. And the Lord--who is the Spirit--makes us more and more like him as we are changed into his glorious image.” 2 Corinthians 3:18. You and your friends are invited to participate in a one-hour webinar (the last one I have scheduled for this Spring) Friday, March 10, 2017, at noon Central Time. Titled Christian Science: What it is and How it heals, this event will cover some of the nuts and bolts about Christian Science. What is it? Where did it come from? How can it be considered a science when it excludes material methods in its approach to healing? How does Christian Science treatment work? Is it positive thinking? Blind faith? Those are starter questions, and the rest is up to the participants. There will be an open question and answer period. This event is sponsored by First Church of Christ, Scientist, Elsah, Illinois, USA. Hope you can join in. And please feel free to share this invitation widely. Readers of this blog are often interested to know when events will be available so that they may participate and invite others. Thanks to the generosity of First Church of Christ, Scientist in Jenkintown, PA, USA, this Thursday, February 23rd, at noon, I will present a webinar entitled, "Christian Science, What it is and How it heals" - a one hour presentation with open QA. Every webinar takes on the flavor of the unique audience that gathers. Thursday's webinar has updated content and visuals, and will provide ample time for responding to questions from participants. Hope to see you there! Feel free to share the invitation. This webinar responds to public questions about Christian Science practice. First time using PowerPoint with this lecture. 2/14/2017 Chasing the donkeys?Have you ever prayed and prayed about something but nothing seemed to change? I did. For two years. Then suddenly a breakthrough came – and on a day I didn’t even pray about it. I was so annoyed! What had happened? Why all that prayer for all that time? And why did things suddenly change that day? I was missing the cause /effect link I often find in prayer-based healing. Sometime later I learned what had happened. I had been chasing the donkeys. What’s that, you ask? Well, the Bible tells the story of Saul, sent by his father to go with a servant and look for some lost donkeys (see I Samuel, chapter 9). They searched in Ephraim (Heb. “fruitful”), then checked in the land of Shalim (Heb. “foxes”). They looked all over the land of Benjamin (Heb. “son of the right hand”) and after that tried Zuph (Heb. “honeycomb”). Then Saul decided it was time to head back. Gone so long, he thought their families at home might be worried. But his companion suggested that while in Zuph they might pass by the house of the prophet Samuel, so they did. What Saul didn’t realize is that the day before, God told Samuel that Saul should be the new ruler of Israel (see I Samuel, chapter 8). The prophet reassured him that the donkeys were safe - already found - and then he anointed Saul for his new mission. To me, chasing the donkeys means more than searching for something – be it better health, a good relationship, or actual donkeys. Prayer that opens one wholeheartedly to the power of divine Love is never offered in vain. The journey of prayer can sometimes be as important as what we conceive as the outcome that we hope for. Fidelity, discipline, commitment, focus, perspicacity and persistence in prayer prepare us to receive more good in our lives. In my case, the character development and spiritual growth that came out of those two years of prayer were worth more in the long run than the simple solution I sought. For two years I was chasing the donkeys; but the spiritual discoveries made along the way have since outlasted the healing moment and formed a strong platform for my healing practice. The Psalmist sang,"The steps of a good man are led by the Lord. And He is happy in his way," (37:7) a sentiment reflected in the following words of Christian Science founder Mary Baker Eddy: “When we wait patiently on God and seek Truth righteously, He directs our path.” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, 254) "If the disciple is advancing spiritually, he is striving to enter in. He constantly turns away from material sense, and looks towards the imperishable things of Spirit. If honest, he will be in earnest from the start, and gain a little each day in the right direction, till at last he finishes his course with joy." (ibid 21:9) 2/7/2017 Our true destiny

Find me on YouTube I have practiced Christian Science professionally in some form since 1979. But my journey with Christian Science started in a Sunday school where as a young child I was taught the Scriptures and some simple basics of Jesus' method of scientific Christian healing. A significant experience at the age of twelve opened my eyes to the great potential of this practice. After impaling my foot on a nail, I prayed the way I had learned in Sunday school. Within moments the pain stopped and healing began. By the next morning the wound had disappeared completely. Having experienced the great potential of Christian Science, there would be no turning back. |
