"And a woman who had been suffering from a hemorrhage for twelve years, came up behind Him and touched the fringe of His cloak, for she was saying to herself, “If I only touch His garment, I will get well.”
But Jesus turning and seeing her said, “Daughter, take courage; your faith has made you well.” At once the woman was made well."
(Matthew 9:20-22 NEW AMERICAN STANDARD BIBLE)
Christian Science practitioners provide prayer upon request with the intent and expectation that quick healing will follow. It is both a spiritual ministry and a professional practice.
I sometimes receive questions about the billing process. For example, I have been asked to fix a monthly retainer fee in case the treatment should go on for awhile. Of course, to such questions I only speak for myself. Each practitioner comes to their own conclusions regarding billing and the professional relationship with their patients. But, I consider taking a case on retainer to be inconsistent with my practice because it assumes prolonged treatment is necessary.
Unlike medical care, which projects treatment time based on the diagnosis of disease and the complexity of symptoms, prayer healing springs from spiritual growth and clearer views of God and man.
Spirituality, not time, is the determining factor in Christian Science healing. Health is an entirely spiritual phenomenon and is found to be permanent when sought through spiritual means.
_The beloved 23rd Psalm wraps up with, "Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever." (King James Bible)
Think of it. Goodness and mercy follow us like a tail follows a cat. They are built into our being.
Goodness can also be translated "being well" from the original Hebrew word AEH. While mercy includes the sense of God's perpetual "lovingkindness".
To me, goodness and mercy is Bible talk for health. Health is a God-given, built-in manifestation of God's goodness and mercy. Spirituality and health are synonymous terms, as are spiritual and healthy. You can't have one without the other, nor BE one without the other. The word health originates from Old English hǣlth, of Germanic origin, related to being whole.
I am happy to say that this blog post has now been published by the Christian Science Journal and has been made available to read online. I have kept the keywords and links found in the original blog for your reference here. And the photos! because they really do make a post fun.
Me, back in my lecturing days.
Many years ago I developed symptoms of laryngitis during a weekend of constant speaking engagements. Saturday, I lectured six hours nonstop in a noisy environment. It seemed to put a strain on my vocal chords. I couldn't make a sound on Sunday morning and I had another important presentation to make at three in the afternoon. As I often do when confronted with crises - health problems included - I turned to the prayer system of Christian Science for help.
The Christian Science method of prayer involves spiritual reasoning that follows very closely the elements included in the Lord's Prayer that Christ Jesus gave to his followers. Each prayer is original, unfolded through inspiration, and starts with understanding God's true nature as Love, Life, Spirit - our true and only Father or Source. It hallows the Christ as the link, or divine message of good, that brings to humanity the capacity to heal and be healed. It takes a look at the true nature of God's creation, including man, as spiritual reflection, and of God's will of good for all on earth and in heaven...
I have practiced Christian Science professionally in
some form since 1979.
But my journey with
Christian Science started
in a Sunday school
where as a young child
I was taught the Scriptures and some simple basics
of Jesus' method of
scientific Christian healing.
A significant experience
at the age of twelve
opened my eyes to
the great potential
of this practice.
After impaling my foot
on a nail,
I prayed the way I had learned
in Sunday school.
the pain stopped
and healing began.
By the next morning the wound had disappeared completely.
the great potential
of Christian Science,
