_The beloved 23rd Psalm wraps up with, "Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever." (King James Bible)
Think of it. Goodness and mercy follow us like a tail follows a cat. They are built into our being.
Goodness can also be translated "being well" from the original Hebrew word AEH. While mercy includes the sense of God's perpetual "lovingkindness".
To me, goodness and mercy is Bible talk for health. Health is a God-given, built-in manifestation of God's goodness and mercy. Spirituality and health are synonymous terms, as are spiritual and healthy. You can't have one without the other, nor BE one without the other. The word health originates from Old English hǣlth, of Germanic origin, related to being whole.
__Healthy wholeness is a normal, natural expression of spirituality. God's creation isn't fragmented into positives and negatives, healthy bits and unhealthy pieces. Knowing this, we don't have to accept a lack of health as a temporary norm. As God's, Spirit's, reflection or image, each one of us includes the full range of spiritual qualities that make up good health. Health is already here and we are each purpose-built to express the good health that God causes in us.
The 23rd Psalm indicates that the message of man's well-being has always been around in some form. 1000 or so years later, Christ Jesus used the term kingdom of God to express the everpresence of health and harmony within us. In fact, Jesus' mission was to teach the kingdom within and to show how this understanding heals sickness and destroys sin. He was a witness to health as a permanent dispensation from Spirit, God, and consequently brought this quality to light in others. Our prayers today can do the same.
Health is like a strong and unremitting breath fresh from God. It infuses man's true being with vigor and vitality. "Health is not a condition of matter, but of Mind...," wrote Mary Baker Eddy. (Science and Health, p. 120) Health, as a present spiritual condition, is inescapable for divine Mind's, God's creation. And Jesus proved that no one is left out. From community leaders to the man in the street, it is discoverable here and now within us.
"Surely [God's] goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will live in the house of the LORD [the consciousness of health] forever." (New Living Translation of Psalm 23:6, with my commentary added)
We have all seen a cat chasing its own tail to exhaustion. You are being FOLLOWED by your tail. Stop the chase. The spiritual fact of God's goodness and mercy have a good, firm hold on you.
Health. It's a built-in.

After impaling my foot
on a nail,
I prayed the way I had learned
in Sunday school.
the pain stopped
and healing began.
By the next morning the wound had disappeared completely.
the great potential
