One time years ago I was laid up in bed with back pain. I was home alone and really needed to get up. With no one to help me, there was just one thing to do. I rolled out of bed and began to crawl across the bedroom floor. As I did, I thought, This is really dumb. If Jesus were here, he’d heal me. He would say "Get up and walk!" and I would be able to. Sometime before, when I was first learning about spiritual healing, I read in an article, “There is no real healing without the Christ.” I thought, Wow. I need to look into this. So I talked to a friend - a Christian Scientist - about it, and he told me to always think of the Christ as God’s activity. That explanation led me to my next question: What is God’s activity? Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy describes the activity of God as, “the living, palpitating presence of Christ, Truth” which heals. (p. 351) And Christ is elsewhere defined as “the true idea voicing good, the divine message from God to men speaking to the human consciousness.” (p. 332) I learned that it is God that messages, or expresses, all that is good, and only what is good, to every consciousness. It is God’s activity to care for me, for everyone, with divine healing messages. Christ is the term for both the messenger (the divine idea voicing good) and the message itself (the divine message from God to men speaking to the human consciousness). In fact, the messenger and the message are one - the activity of God. God is never absent, never inactive, never inattentive to human needs. He is perpetually manifesting, expressing, revealing His presence and power to me and to all people in just the way we can understand it - no matter where we are or what circumstances we might be in. Jesus was the man with the mission of teaching and preaching Christ and healing by it. That’s why he was called Christ Jesus. But when Jesus left this earth, he did not take away the Christ with him. One of the last things Christ Jesus told his disciples was, "Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world." (Matthew 28:20) The I, of which Jesus spoke, was the healing Christ. God’s constant action of making Himself known, - his messenger and message, Christ - was, is still, and forever will be here. The Christ is active and operating now. So when I was crawling painfully across my bedroom floor and I had that thought that if Jesus were here he would heal me, I realized, “Wait a minute. Jesus may not be here but the Christ is! You can get up and walk.” And I did. Slowly, and a bit painfully at first, I got up and managed to walk to where I needed to go. I stayed on my feet and continued walking more and more. I shortly found I was free from pain. I had previously dealt with back pain from time to time, but after this healing – after this direct message of God’s present power through Christ - I was never bothered by it again. How wonderful it is to know that God’s message of divine good is still here speaking directly to human consciousness, and that we can know and feel the “living, palpitating presence of Christ, Truth” wherever we are, and be healed. One of the links above connects with an article on hypocrisy in religion. I thought of it because a woman who used to attend our little branch church passed away this week, and her husband wrote the most beautiful memorial and ran it in the paper as an obituary. I was young when I joined the church and very much impressed and influenced by those I thought of as being in "authority." One of them made the comment that she came to our church reeking of cigarette smoke, as if that was an indication of hypocrisy. Oh I just hang my head and weep when I realize the hypocrisy of THAT. She came to church because she loved and needed to. My job was not to see her as a cigarette smoker. My job was to see her as the child of God, perfect and free from addiction of any kind. To greet her and love her and appreciate all that her husband did and more. My next step is to forgive those who judged her, and to forgive myself. 2/17/2012 08:28:48 am
And you will forgive, Carrie. Your heart has been readied for forgiveness by the tenderness and compassion and remorse you are feeling. Tomorrow's blog post speaks to the life lessons we gain as we move on after the "wintery blasts" of sorrow. Remorse is often a symptom of the blast. But we can wake up and do better, the way the frozen soil can soften to allow tender grass to push through. You will forgive and you will be a greater blessing to yourself and others for it.

Find me on YouTube I have practiced Christian Science professionally in some form since 1979. But my journey with Christian Science started in a Sunday school where as a young child I was taught the Scriptures and some simple basics of Jesus' method of scientific Christian healing. A significant experience at the age of twelve opened my eyes to the great potential of this practice. After impaling my foot on a nail, I prayed the way I had learned in Sunday school. Within moments the pain stopped and healing began. By the next morning the wound had disappeared completely. Having experienced the great potential of Christian Science, there would be no turning back. |
