Here is a photo of my kid kissing my cat. It's the background photo on my computer desktop. Everytime I look at it, I remember this particular cat's habit of seeking out the sunniest spot in the apartment - my home office - for her nap. There she would lie, soaking up the warmth, but with her eyes squeezed shut and her face buried in her paws. I would laugh everytime I saw her, because it seemed so contradictory.
I would say, "But you CHOSE to lie there! Stop trying to shut out the light!"
How often do we make choices and then close our eyes to the full benefits that come with them? Living life with a spiritual focus does change things. Spiritual light doesn't just rest on the surface keeping one cozy and warm. It fills in the cracks and fissures of character, exposing secret thoughts and practices that interfere with progress.
Sometimes it can get downright uncomfortable as it pours in through the openings of human consciousness and begins to demand change. But change produced by spiritual light, bringing new views of God and his creation, is always an upgrade. No need to fear it. No point in trying to shut it out.
You have chosen to live your life in the light. Enjoy the warmth, but don't close yourself off from the deeper-reaching brilliantly-shining light penetrating to the innermost regions of your being. It may wake you up. It may shake you up. It will definitely change you - but only in a good way.
Paul wrote, "We all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord." (2 Corinthians 3:18)

After impaling my foot
on a nail,
I prayed the way I had learned
in Sunday school.
the pain stopped
and healing began.
By the next morning the wound had disappeared completely.
