A couple were witnesses to a curious and strange phenomenon. Every night a figure would enter their room and sit on their bed. Not only could they see a vague form, but they could feel a weight pulling the blankets tight. Upon turning on the light, they would find nobody there, but a perceivable bottom print would routinely be left on the covers near their feet.
Was it a ghost? They didn't want to believe that. In fact, they didn't think they believed that. But what they knew for sure was, they didn't want the appearance of a ghostly figure pestering them in their home at night.
Even though these events took place over 20 years ago, the case was unusual enough - a first for me - so that I remember the details of my prayer. I prayed to understand the one Spirit to be God, and that Spirit's manifestation is never stuck, but reflects the perpetual progression of divine Life. I couldn't believe that anyone could be helplessly trapped into repeating the same patterns of thought and behavior without getting anywhere.
Progress and movement belong to Spirit, omniactive divine Mind. Creation reflects Mind's spiritual attributes, and a reflection can't manipulate, interfere with or arrest the progressive movement of spiritual being. Any appearance of being stuck, being trapped, is simply a mistaken belief. Good, God, is always present and discernible, no matter how tenacious evil may appear to be. An understanding of this can help us move along, see progress, and accept more and more evidence of good in our lives.
Prayer also revealed that God's children - including men, women and children - are heavenly hosts. That is, we are only capable of hosting, or carrying along with us in consciousness, the thoughts and experiences which come from divine Love and which produce love in us. Only good has permanent residence in us.
The idea of a malevolent force possessing a home, a body, or a person's thinking - or even the idea of a benign occupation that serves no particular purpose - is an illusion. Divine Love and Love's healthy, harmonious ideas are all that can set up house in spiritual consciousness.
Prayer alongs these lines quickly put an end to the nightly disturbance and the mysterious bottom marks at the foot of the bed.
In a chapter devoted to explaining so-called mysterious spiritual phenomena, Science and Health explains, "Mortal mind sees what it believes as certainly as it believes what it sees. It feels, hears, and sees its own thoughts. Pictures are mentally formed before the artist can convey them to canvas. So is it with all material conceptions." (p. 86) Further on in a later chapter, we read, "Mortal mind produces its own phenomena, and then charges them to something else, - like a kitten glancing into the mirror and thinking it sees another kitten." (p.220)
I didn't pray to get rid of a ghost - as in the so-called traces of a person who had died. I prayed to understand the true relation between God and man - of Spirit and of spiritual phenomena - and to see evidence of this true phenomena in the case.
Whether dealing with the mysterious spiritual phenomena of a bottom print on a bed, or the mysterious physical phenomena of an appearance of a cancer, we are dealing with mortal thought. Spiritual insight into the actual present, spiritual phenomena of Spirit, God, can break the mesmeric hold of the illusion and erase the evidence of any other presence or power.
Divine Spirit is reflected in light. A human consciousness enlightened spiritually by prayer cannot retain figures, shadows, imprints, or marks of evil in any form.
Leviticus notes, "I (God) will give peace in the land, and ye shall lie down, and none shall make you afraid." (26:6)
Hymn 44 in the Christian Science Hymnal invites everyone to go to God in prayer and leave the shadows and fears and traces of evil behind.
Come to the land of peace;
From shadows come away;
Where all the sounds of weeping cease,
And storms no more have sway.
Fear hath no dwelling here;
But pure repose and love
Breathe through the bright, celestial air
The spirit of the dove.
In this divine abode,
Change leaves no saddening trace;
Come, trusting heart, come to thy God,
Thy holy resting place.

I have practiced Christian Science professionally in
some form since 1979.
But my journey with
Christian Science started
in a Sunday school
where as a young child
I was taught the Scriptures and some simple basics
of Jesus' method of
scientific Christian healing.
A significant experience
at the age of twelve
opened my eyes to
the great potential
of this practice.
After impaling my foot
on a nail,
I prayed the way I had learned
in Sunday school.
the pain stopped
and healing began.
By the next morning the wound had disappeared completely.
the great potential
of Christian Science,
