Motorcycle riders are big as life, yet on the road they can be hard to see for most motorists. Automobile drivers often experience what is called a "blind spot". Even when drivers do see a motorcyclist, they don’t always know what to expect - thinking that he can turn on a dime in a split-second, for example. Sometimes motorcyclists are treated as if they are just another car on the road. As a motorcyclist for years, I’ve experienced this type of non-seeing with drivers looking right at me and then making hair-raising moves. Being at least a thousand pounds lighter, and smaller in every dimension, motorcycles need to be seen and appreciated for what they actually are. Although I found time and time again that drivers just did not see me in my right light, I also discovered that I could stay safe if I could see them in theirs. I am not talking about keeping track of what is happening around me, but seeing myself and the other drivers on the road in a spiritual light. I turned to spiritual sense to help me do this. Spiritual sense involves the authentic perception of real being imparted by God, our divine source. When people hold a false view of themselves as material and vulnerable, it colors the way they see and experience the world. From a material sense perspective cause and effect seem to spring from matter and material law. From this viewpoint, God seems distant, disinterested, and even unavailable to His creation. If a material sense of life becomes ingrained, we may barely notice the limits such thinking places on us regarding our abilities, opportunities, safety, understanding, health and so on. To material sense, everyone can look dangerous, and disaster can seem inescapable. But I have learned that we can reject this material sense. We all have spiritual authority to eliminate a sense of others as dangerous and of ourselves as vulnerable by recognizing all cause and effect to be under divine control. The Bible teaches how God perceives His creation and gives us the spiritual sense of ourselves and others as the reflection or expression of law, order, dominion and security, made in God's own image and likeness. (See Genesis, chapter 1). God pronounces His creation as very good, as the reflection of divine Good. This means that God's law of good, God's order of good, God's dominion of good, and God's security in good, are inherently part of our identity as God's children and can't be taken away from us. Man is not the creation of a disinterested Deity. God cherishes us all! Deuteronomy describes God's care this way."“For the people of Israel belong to the Lord; Jacob is his special possession...He surrounded them and watched over them; he guarded them as he would guard his own eyes. Like an eagle that rouses her chicks and hovers over her young, so he spread his wings to take them up and carried them safely on his pinions. The Lord alone guided them; they followed no foreign gods." (Chapter 32, New Living Translation) In the Glossary of Scriptural terms, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy provides the spiritual sense of "Israel" as "the offspring of Spirit". And "Jacob" represents "inspiration". We as the offspring of Spirit are surrounded, watched over, guarded and carried by the inspiration -the authentic perception of real, spiritual being - that God gives us, rather than by any "foreign gods", which to me refers to blind, limited and false material views of creation. (583,589) Man, as the likeness of Spirit is not a limited material or mortal being. He is spiritual. Spiritual sense helps us see (understand) things as they really are and stay safe. I have found in my practice of Christian Science that these ideas relate as directly to healing the sick as they do to seeing clearly on the road. Christ Jesus founded his healing ministry on this fact of man’s essential spirituality. Protection and healing followed as a result. The New Testament book of John (see chapter 9) tells of a man born blind, --that is, born into a whole set of limits. No one, not even his parents, entertained any idea or hope for his usefulness. Everyone believed in (could only see, perceive, or mentally entertain) a list of limits and “cannot do’s” for him. But Christ Jesus had another view. Jesus perceived, through spiritual sense, the works of God made manifest in him. Seen in his true light, the man was healed - walking, leaping, and praising God for his newly-seen useful, active life. Next his parents saw the healing, and then the whole community had their eyes opened to new possibilities. All of Christ Jesus' experiences and teachings on healing point to the fact that we can and must all be seen for what we are: spiritual, not material - God’s perfect image, now and forever. This viewpoint is available to everyone because it is the actual truth of being. It enables us to drop false limitations and replace them with spiritual qualities that liberate every aspect of being. God, being the Father-Mother of all, is the source of all action, ability, wisdom, power, protection and healing. God imparts to us the practical understanding and recognition of our native spirituality without limit or interruption. We are purpose-built to perceive ourselves as spiritual. Seeing ourselves and others as we are made to be seen holds everyone securely and safely on God’s upward wing - on the road, and everywhere! Find me on YouTube I have practiced Christian Science professionally in some form since 1979. But my journey with Christian Science started in a Sunday school where as a young child I was taught the Scriptures and some simple basics of Jesus' method of scientific Christian healing. A significant experience at the age of twelve opened my eyes to the great potential of this practice. After impaling my foot on a nail, I prayed the way I had learned in Sunday school. Within moments the pain stopped and healing began. By the next morning the wound had disappeared completely. Having experienced the great potential of Christian Science, there would be no turning back. |
