2/9/2012 Who is this blogger, anyway? To learn about me is to learn about healing prayer. Really, it is what I am all about. I believe that everyone can be benefited by healing prayer. Spirituality isn't a lifestyle choice. It is the basic element of identity. Experiencing the divine through prayer reaches to the core of one's true being. It meets the human need like nothing else can. I am a Christian Science practitioner and teacher and I absolutely love my work! I have practiced Christian Science for others since 1989. But let me start this conversation by telling you a bit about how this all came about. My family was introduced to Christian Science through my dad’s healing of acute depression after World War II. So, I was exposed to the idea that God heals sickness from an early age. When I was twelve, I decided to pray myself for a healing after impaling my foot on a rusty nail. As extraordinary as it may sound, within moments of starting to pray, the pain stopped. In this prayer, I quite simply realized and declared that I was spiritual, and not material. I cleaned the wound, wrapped my foot and continued to pray. By evening the wound was healed and I never had any ill effects - no problems with tetanus, infection or scarring from it. A few years after this healing, when I was sixteen, I began a deep study of the Bible. As I traced the events of healing prayer through the millennia, I became convinced that the spiritual light of Christ - the God-power that brought healing through the prayers of patriarchs and prophets, Christ Jesus and the disciples - was still present today. This series of events - Dad's healing, my own effective prayers and that insight into the Christ - set my future course in the practice of Christian Science. In 1979, I began training to become a Christian Science nurse. Nursing provided me with a good look into healing through spiritual means. After five years of formal training and mentoring, I nursed for an additional five before opening my first office as a Christian Science practitioner in New Jersey, USA. (A recent blog post discussed a course of instruction I took that laid an important foundation in my preparation to help others through prayer.) Mary Baker Eddy, the discoverer and founder of Christian Science, wrote, "The seeker of Truth will find it." I have lectured publicly and helped legislators, journalists and public authorities understand the connection between prayer and healing. But the main theme of all my years in the practice of prayer has been to help seekers find Truth, God. I moved to Paris in 2005 and began teaching classes on Christian Science in 2010. Now it's your turn. What brings you to the subject of God, spirituality, prayer? Who are you?

I was raised in a secular family, but was an ardent little seeker as a child. Growing up, I investigated many spiritual paths, but as a young adult expecting my first child, one day I finally found the answer to all my questions and pondering. I was living in Boston at the time and was walking through the Boston Common one day when I saw some people sitting at a table covered with books. I was curious, so I walked over to see what they were offering. These people were Christian Scientists working at a "Bookmobile" table, and they had copies of the Bible and the writings of Mary Baker Eddy. I had heard of Christian Science (hard not to, when you live in Boston!) and had even walked by The Mother Church many times and wondered what "Christ" had to do with "Scientist," but I had never investigated. I didn't want to seem greedy, so I picked up the thinnest book I could find on the table, which was "Unity of Good." As soon as I took it home and read the first couple of pages I knew it was the truth I'd been looking for all those years. I found a Reading Room and got Science and Health and a Bible, as well as a Christian Science Quarterly, and the rest is history, sort of. Actually some years later I wandered away from Science...I just didn't seem to have the moral fiber to stick with it. But I came back, and I'm soooo glad I did! Thanks for your excellent blog, Michelle. 2/8/2012 06:23:04 am

Find me on YouTube I have practiced Christian Science professionally in some form since 1979. But my journey with Christian Science started in a Sunday school where as a young child I was taught the Scriptures and some simple basics of Jesus' method of scientific Christian healing. A significant experience at the age of twelve opened my eyes to the great potential of this practice. After impaling my foot on a nail, I prayed the way I had learned in Sunday school. Within moments the pain stopped and healing began. By the next morning the wound had disappeared completely. Having experienced the great potential of Christian Science, there would be no turning back. |
